Amazon.com Review

Leadership authorities James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner say employees perform best when their contributions are genuinely appreciated. Unfortunately, the two contend, most executives have not mastered the decidedly soft-management skill of "encouragement" that fosters such behavior. In Encouraging the Heart, they examine how this type of compassionate supervision is becoming a critical part of successful management today, and through example and suggestion they describe how readers can establish the process in their own businesses.

This is not a book about glad-handing and backslapping, gold stars, and payoffs. It's about the importance of linking rewards and appreciation to standards of excellence. It's about why encouragement is absolutely essential to sustaining people's commitment to organizations and outcomes. It's about the hard work it takes to get extraordinary things done in organizations, and it's about ways to enhance your own ability in--and comfort with--recognizing and celebrating the achievements of others.

Kouzes, J. M., & Posner, B. Z. (2006). A Leader's Legacy. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.
"This superb book defies conventional wisdom in favor of being truly wise. In chapters such as ‘Leaders Should Want to Be Liked’ and ‘Failure Is Always an Option,’ Kouzes and Posner portray leaders on a human scale, opening leadership to anyone who is willing to be fully human. That, of course, is a challenge! And yet the style of this book—with its stories of well-grounded leaders and its engaging conversational prose—encourages the reader to live into and up to that challenge. A Leader's Legacy will surely become key to the literary legacy that its authors have been leaving in their wake over the past twenty-five years."

Kouzes, J. M., & Posner, B. Z. (2008). The Leadership Challenge (The Leadership Practices Inventory) (4 ed.). San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.

From Publishers Weekly

An inspirational and practical handbook, this expanded revision of a bestselling manual originally published in 1987 offers sound advice to corporate leaders and entrepreneurs, to managers and employees and to aspiring leaders in retail, manufacturing, government, community, church and school settings. Drawing on interviews and a questionnaire survey of more than 3000 leaders, the authors identify five fundamental practices of exemplary leadership: challenge the status quo; inspire a shared vision; enable others to act; model the way forward by setting an example; tap individuals' inner drives by linking rewards and performance. Kouzes, chairman and CEO of TPG/Learning Systems, and Posner, managing partner of Santa Clara University's Executive Development Center in California, write insightful, down-to-earth, jargon-free prose. This new edition has been substantially updated to reflect the challenges of shrinking work forces, rising cynicism and expanded telecommunications. An appendix includes the author's Leadership Practices Inventory, a tool for assessing leadership behavior. 75,000 first printing; Executive Program Book Club main selection; author tour.

2. Title: Positive Reinforcement: Misunderstood and Misused.
Authors: Daniels, Aubrey C., Daniels, James E.
Source: T+D; Mar2006, Vol. 60 Issue 3, p16-16, 2/3p
Document Type: Article
Abstract: The article presents the authors' views on positive reinforcement, which, according to them, is one of the most misunderstood tools of leadership. According to the authors, it is very important for leaders to truly understand positive reinforcement because it is the only behavioral consequence that can maximize all aspects of the corporation's performance. The authors assert that an important part of the leader's role in creating the best working environment is to confirm that positive reinforcement is understood and delivered for the right behaviors, at the right time, and at the right frequency. The authors present some considerations or rules, which according to them helps in the efficient and effective delivery of positive reinforcement. They assert that, to be effective, the reinforcement must mean something to the person receiving it. Some people hate to be recognized for anything in public. The job of the leader is to find out what is significant to the individual. They claim that, when given correctly, positive reinforcement can produce amazing results.
